Welcome to Girls on the Run of Western Colorado-- a life-changing, non-profit prevention program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Locally, we also strive to insure that our programs are affordable and accessible for all girls. Our programs are offered in communities throughout Western Colorado. In the 2012-2013 school year, we had more than 2200 girls running across 16+ counties in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. The teams are coached by more than 400 volunteer coaches.
Girls on the Run is an after school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities, such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During the 10-week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement, and a foundation in team building, to help them become strong, contented and self-confident young women. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to walk or run a 5K (3.1 mile event). Girls on the Run of Western Colorado is an Affiliate/Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 170 locations across the United States and Canada.
